For maverick restaurateur, Vincent Swart, life is a treadmill. It’s all about the search for the ‘next big thing’—that elusive innovation needed to secure for one more season, the three stars enjoyed by his exclusive dining experience, The Swart Moot. When a chance occult encounter sets in motion a train of events culminating in a whirlwind trip to a distant planet, he returns with the wherewithal to finally realise his lifelong obsession: putting dragon on the menu. As his plan proceeds, his fragile moral compass reaches breaking point and his cosy, carefully constructed world threatens to crash and burn all around him.
There, he is engaged by Denzil the Scientist and despatched on a mission to the Balkans to locate a mysterious cryptid—the Lychnidos seal.
In the early nineteenth century, Denzil VI (1779–1868), invariably known as ‘the Scientist’ on foot of his passion for natural philosophy, ascended to the throne of the Principality. He ruled for the next forty-six years, and, during that time, his own research and his support for the scientists, artists, inventors and entrepreneurs around him led to many extraordinary works.
Jacky Hangman; an Englishman with a dark secret, endures a brutal existence as the ‘birdman’ in a gang of zoo and museum collectors in nineteenth century West Africa. Taking his chance to escape, following an injury to the gang boss, he arrives in the Principality. There, he is engaged by Denzil the Scientist and despatched on a mission to the Balkans to locate a mysterious cryptid—the Lychnidos seal. Dodging bandits, mad monks, a young femme fatale and the Ottoman security services, Jacky begins to zero in on his quarry with the help of his assistant, the taciturn Leatherhead. Unfortunately, his past will not leave him be.
